Whether you're just starting out in archery or aiming for competitive excellence, understanding the key terms used in the sport can dramatically improve your learning curve. Archery has a rich vocabulary, much of which is rooted in centuries of tradition, and each term carries important nuances that affect form, equipment, or performance.
Here’s a comprehensive guide to important archery terms every archer—beginner or pro—should know.
The rigid, central part of a bow. It’s where the limbs are attached and houses the grip, arrow rest, and accessories like the sight or stabilizer.
The top and bottom flexible parts of the bow that store and release energy when you shoot. Limbs can be detachable or fixed depending on the bow type.
The string connecting the two limbs. It is drawn back to shoot the arrow and comes in various materials like Fast Flight or Dacron.
A small shelf or mechanical support attached to the riser that holds the arrow in place before and during the shot.
A spring-loaded device that corrects the arrow’s horizontal movement upon release, helping to fine-tune arrow flight and reduce inconsistency.
A rod or system of rods that help balance the bow and absorb vibration, leading to steadier shots and improved follow-through.
An adjustable aiming aid mounted on the riser to help the archer aim more precisely at the target.
A consistent spot on the archer’s face (like the corner of the mouth or under the chin) where the drawing hand comes to rest at full draw. Crucial for consistent shooting.
The distance between the nocking point and the back of the riser (plus 1.75 inches) when the bow is fully drawn.
The amount of force (in pounds) required to pull the bowstring to full draw. It varies by bow and affects arrow speed and energy.
The distance from the deepest part of the grip to the string when the bow is unstrung. Correct brace height ensures smoother arrow flight.
The muscular engagement in the upper back during the draw and release phase. Used to ensure a smooth, controlled shot.
The act of letting go of the bowstring to launch the arrow. It should be smooth and controlled for accurate shots.
The posture and motion of the archer after the arrow has been released. Good follow-through indicates proper form.
A measure of the arrow shaft’s stiffness or flexibility. It plays a huge role in arrow flight. A lower number means a stiffer arrow.
The vanes or feathers at the back of the arrow that stabilize it in flight. Typically, there are three per arrow.
The plastic version of fletching (as opposed to natural feathers). Used in most modern arrows.
The spot on the string where the arrow is consistently placed. A properly set nocking point ensures level flight.
The groove at the end of the arrow where it snaps onto the bowstring.
A tuning technique where arrows without fletching are shot to assess arrow flight and spine alignment.
The difference in strength or curvature between the top and bottom limb. Adjusting the tiller helps balance the bow.
A round or group of arrows shot before scoring (e.g., 3 or 6 arrows in target archery).
The tightness or proximity of multiple arrows on the target. Better grouping means more consistent form.
The yellow-colored central area of a target, often worth 9 or 10 points depending on scoring format.
The innermost circle on the target used as a tie-breaker. Hitting the X-ring is the pinnacle of accuracy.
A feature in compound bows where the draw weight reduces significantly once the bow is fully drawn.
A rare event where an arrow hits and splits another arrow already in the target.
A form of archery where archers shoot at three-dimensional animal targets placed at different distances—great for simulation and bowhunting practice.
Mastering archery isn’t just about hitting the bullseye—it’s about understanding your gear, refining your form, and communicating with fellow archers. Learning these important archery terms will make you more confident on the range, help you tune your equipment better, and enjoy the sport more deeply.
Whether you shoot for fun, fitness, or competition, knowledge is your best ally.
