With this post we want to help you to get started with archery. We are going to introduce you to the sport step by step in this article.
Archery is fun but it requires a lot to get started. You should find an archery club where you can take sessions from a live person as this is the best way to learn. Coach/trainer can help you in detail to understand about the game and can guide you in choosing right equipment to start with. Archery is for all ages, so don't worry if you are not in school, you can always start archery even if you are retired.
1. Find archery club near you
Archery is not a game like soccer, basketball which you can try on your own. You can search online for good archery club near your area, review the ratings, visit the place and meet the people who train there. Take advice from the coaches and explain them that you are beginner. Almost all the archery clubs have program for beginners but there is no harm asking if they are running any archery for beginners program. Archery equipment are costly so please ask if they have equipment you can possibly rent. Avid Archery Club is one of the famous archery club in India who provides best archery training and they also provide free equipment for the first month under archery for beginners program to help beginners discover about their interest in the game.
2. Learn from expert
There is so much of content over the internet about the archery. You can always read, watch to learn the techniques but nothing matches learning from an expert archer. Experienced archer can help you understand how to position yourself and can teach you quick techniques to aim properly.
3. Join beginners program
Start with the beginners program only as such programs are specifically designed for people who have not tried archery before. First try to learn about all the archery terms, equipment names, how to hold the bow, how to stand and how to aim. Archery is a serious game, so understand about the safety precautions while playing the game. Archery is game of techniques starting from how to stand, how much string to be pulled, how to aim, how to release arrow. Beginners program are generally designed to make you aware about terms, tips and techniques of archery
4. Select equipment
You can check if archery club provides equipment on rent, if they do then take the equipment on rent and understand about your interest in the game of archery. Archery equipment are expensive so better discover your interest first and then invest in purchasing quality equipment. You can also purchase beginners kit which is cheap and can help you in discovering your interest in the archery. Also take understanding of different types of bows and discover which is suitable for you. Primarily there are two types i.e. recurve and compound bows.
Discover eye dominance to identify which side of your body (left arm or right arm) can hold the bow to get better results. Although dominant hand seems important but dominant eye can affect how you aim while shooting.
Your size and strength are the main deciding factor for the bow as it determines your draw weight. Identifying draw weight is one of the thing where trainer/expert from archery club can help.
5. Use safety gears
Understand from the expert about safety gears which an archer uses while shooting. Always use safety gears to protect yourself while shooting. Finger tab protects your finger from the strain of pulling as string can hurt your finger badly, arm guard protects your arm from the string when it's released during the shooting. Chest guard also protects you from the snap of string. Always take extra precautions when you start out.
6. Identify arrow length
Take help of expert from archery club to discover about your draw length and choose your arrows based on your draw length. There are different types of arrow made with wood, carbon, fiberglass etc. Draw length plays very important role for beginners and choose arrows which are less costly in the beginning as arrows get damaged when you miss the target.
7. Keep playing
Keep practicing and master the fundamentals. Keep checking with trainer and show the score to understand areas of improvement. It takes lot of effort and time to become an expert archer, so focus on learning the technique of grouping rather than focusing on bulls eye.
